Pinhole: Clock

One of the things I love about my ‘job’ is the feedback I receive about the blog.  Sometimes this is shared via the comments section below and sometimes it’s of a private nature – shared with me in personal emails or in conversation.

I am always thrilled to receive feedback, to know that the blog is speaking to people and that people are benefiting from my efforts.  It is this which keeps me writing, even when the ‘business side’ of Dakini Grace seems to demand my attention.

And so, as we say goodbye to 2011, I wanted to take a moment to firstly thank you for reading.  All my life I’ve wanted to write something that would make a positive difference in another person’s life.  Starting the blog and receiving feedback on its content is one way I’m seeing that dream unfold and for this, I feel blessed indeed.

I always wanted to take a moment to reflect back on 2011 and share with you the 10 posts that seem to have touched people the most.

You may find your own favourite in the list, and perhaps not.  Either way, I’d love to hear from you – what were your favourites?  How did they influence or inspire you, or perhaps change your thinking around a particular issue?

Lifestyle experimentation

Sydney has been blessed with a spectacular Autumn this year.

Actually, Sydney is blessed with a spectacular Autumn most years. Temperatures are in the mid 20s (let’s say, 77 Fahrenheit), the humidity is gone, and clouds loll at the edge of the horizon like picture frames, not daring to impinge on the beauty of the vast, blue sky.

In this utopic environment,Sydney, Australia I spend my time with the lucky few. The ones who’ve arranged their lives to take advantage of opportunities like perfect weather and waves. The ones who have prioritised lifestyle above all else.

I’ve always wanted a life which works with nature; which appreciates the benefits of the seasons and which doesn’t see me missing the seasons in favour of artificial light and air.

I think many Australians would say the same thing and yet, I am always intrigued by just how empty the beaches and parks are during the week. Particularly in a city which is home to so many who love her because of ‘the lifestyle’ she offers.

Which got me to thinking, perhaps it’s our concept of ‘lifestyle’ that needs further consideration? (more…)

Days of giving (or why the national defence budget is so large)

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

I was recently on a sojourn in the country and in my travels, I happened upon a sign; Lent, Days of Giving.

It gave me a moment’s pause.

Days of Giving

Admittedly I am a lapsed Catholic and my involvement in, or even thoughts of, Lent in recent years have been…. well…. non-existent.

So it was necessary to travel quite deeply into the recesses of my mind to contemplate the meaning of Lent.  As I did, the same thought kept arising.

Lent – days of giving?  I am pretty sure my teachers told me it was about giving up.

Childhood memories arose of trying to find something I could give up that would actually mean something, without actually meaning that I would feel desperately deprived for 40 days…

And so I got to thinking about giving and giving up. (more…)

New stories

“There cannot be too many glorious women” Marianne Williamson

Today is International Women’s Day, an annual event marking the economic, social and political achievements of women. The United Nations has its own theme this year, Equal rights, equal opportunities: Progress for all. Not intended as a global theme, countries and groups are encouraged to adopt one which is appropriate to them.

Women of the world

For me, I’ve decided on a theme of New Stories.

I’ve decided we need new stories about women and what makes for a successful life, a successful career, a successful relationship. In this re-creation process, there is one particular story I’d like to kibosh. It’s the ‘happily ever after’ story. You know the one – that there’s one soul mate for everyone and all you need to do is find him and your life will be easy and free and joyous everyday in every moment.

I want to eradicate this story, in its current form, because its consequences for women are… hmmm, now I don’t want to sound alarmist, but I do feel compelled to say…. catastrophic.  Or very close to it. (more…)
